A former Rockstar Games developer has said they would be shocked if GTA 6 does not borrow some ideas from the studio's previous game, Red Dead Redemption 2.

Appearing on the Kiwi Talkz podcast, former audio designer Rob Carr--who worked on GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption II--said his evidence is that Rockstar already did this.

GTA 5, for example, borrowed the Dead Eye system from the original Red Dead, Carr said. "They used the Dead Eye as one of the perks for one of the characters. You've got the Dead Eye thing that Michael used, I think you've got the slow-mo driving thing for Franklin, and the basically berserker mode for Trevor," Carr said (via GamesRadar).

Carr went on to say that Rockstar is known to "expand upon" some of the "key things" from previous games in their next games, and that should happen again with GTA 6.

"I'll be surprised if they don't use something from Red Dead 2," he said. However, Carr did not share any specifics on which elements of Red Dead Redemption 2 he thinks will come to GTA 6 in one way or another.

GTA 6 launches on November 19, following delays from Fall 2025 and then from May 2026 to its new date in November this year. Rockstar's marketing efforts for GTA 6 will begin this summer.

The game is coming to market with an unprecedented amount of hype behind it and massive sales projections of 40 million sales in the first year alone. The gaming industry has numerous serious issues, and GTA 6 being a huge success will not solve those problems, experts have said.

The next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game, TMNT: Empire City, will launch on April 30, Cortopia Studios and Beyond Frames Entertainment have announced.

The VR game arrives that day for $25 for Meta Quest, Steam VR, and Pico. This is the first TMNT VR game, Ace St. Germain, the game's creative director, said it "captures that feeling of being a turtle."

And yes, that includes pizza. "One city. Four brothers. Endless pizza," reads a line from the game's description.

The story picks up after the death of the villain Shredder, and in his absence, other baddies are taking over, including the Foot Clan. "It's time to reclaim what's yours," the description goes on.

Players will wield the turtles' iconic weapons, allowing players to stab and slash enemies. Players can also use Donatello's workbench to equip gadgets and upgrades. The game also sports a "fluid" parkour system and is playable solo or with friends in four-player co-op. And you can lift weights and eat pizza in VR. Finally.

As mentioned, Empire City is priced at $25, but Meta Quest users can get it for $20 ahead of launch.

Instead of following up Gears 5 with a proper sequel, the franchise's next game is going back in time with Gears of War: E-Day. But that hasn't stopped JD Fenix voice actor Liam McIntyre from sharing his story ideas for a potential Gears of War 6.

Posting on X, McIntyre claimed that "there was a suggestion" that Gears developer The Coalition would make Gears 6, but the studio "wanted to try something new." Even so, McIntyre stated that the forthcoming Gears of War: E-Day "looks great" and he can't wait to play it. When prompted by a reply addressing the ending of Gears 5, McIntyre shared how he would approach the story from there.

Spoilers for Gears 5 follow, if you don't know about the ending over six years after its release. Protagonist Kait Diaz is forced to choose between saving JD or her wingman Del Walker, with the other meeting a brutal demise at the hands of Swarm Queen Reyna. It's unclear which branch is canon to Gears lore or how a sequel would accommodate player choices, but McIntyre's "solve" is making Del's survival canon, the Swarm reviving and possessing JD, and a rogue Marcus Fenix having to face his zombie-fied son.

"But somehow you save him. Not sure how yet. Or if it matters lol," McIntyre wrote.

It might not be the perfect idea of how to follow up on Gears 5, which puts the Gears saga in a dilemma, but it's more than anything we've heard from developers. Former Gears boss Rod Fergusson stated that he wrote a proposed plot synopsis for Gears 6 before departing The Coalition, but he suspected that the studio "probably threw that out."

Microsoft and The Coalition haven't shown anything from Gears of War: E-Day since its 2024 reveal, but the game is still locked for a 2026 launch. In fact, it'll be the main focus of its own deep-dive Direct presentation following this year's Xbox Games Showcase in June.

While McIntyre isn't expected to be in Gears of War: E-Day--by nature of that title being a prequel to the original game and his character not being born yet--you'll hear his voice as the eponymous character in Marvel's Wolverine, which is set for a September 15 release date exclusively on PlayStation 5.

The horror game Dead by Daylight is coming up on its 10th anniversary, and with the milestone on the horizon, developer Behaviour Interactive has told fans there are no plans for a numbered sequel. Dead by Daylight is a live-service game, and while the team did consider a sequel or some kind of new version of Dead by Daylight over the years, it never made sense to actually do it.

Creative director Dave Richard told IGN that fans have invested time and money into Dead by Daylight, and launching a sequel "never makes sense for the fans. Never ever."

Head of partnerships Mathieu Cote, meanwhile, said Behaviour wants to bring Dead by Daylight "kicking and screaming" into the next decade of its existence.

"We're not going to do a DBD 2, that's for sure. They're not going to have to buy a DBD 2 and restart from scratch. But we understand that the game is 10 years old, and that's a long time in video game years," he explained. "And we want people that start today, tomorrow, next year, to feel like they're playing a game that is current. It's not a nostalgia token, it's a real game that you can play today and that makes sense."

This way of thinking lines up with what Microsoft has said about a possible Minecraft sequel, saying developer Mojang will continue to update the main game instead of pushing out a numbered sequel.

While Behaviour may not make a Dead by Daylight sequel anytime soon, or ever, the studio is thinking about how to do a "graphical rework" to leverage new hardware, like the upcoming Projext Helix Xbox console or the PlayStation 6. At the same time, though, some players could get left behind in this scenario.

Richard said, "Who do we leave behind? Yeah. And is that something we're willing to do? Can these people update and follow us? And it depends on the area of the world as well, right?"

Some people may be unwilling or unable to upgrade to new, more powerful, and more expensive hardware, especially today with the AI race driving up prices for graphics cards and memory, Richard said. "So, it's interesting, but it's more of a challenge than it's interesting for us at this time," he explained.

In other Dead by Daylight news, the company recently said it had nothing to do with the recent heist of 12 tons of KitKats.

Actor Jack Black is a big fan of video games, and specifically Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption series, and he thinks it's too bad that there hasn't been a Red Dead movie yet.

Speaking to Polygon, Black said it's a "shame" that Rockstar isn't making a Red Dead movie because the games are "the most cinematic" and would seemingly lend themselves nicely to a big-screen adaptation. "It would be, like, too easy to make them into great movies," he said, adding that he would love to be in a Red Dead movie if anyone asked him.

"Hey Housers? Dan, Sam, I'm waiting for your call," he said, referencing the Rockstar founder brothers. Dan Houser left Rockstar in 2020 to start a new company, Absurd Ventures. Sam Houser remains at Rockstar and is its current president.

Also in the interview, Black said he understands that the Houser brothers have said they have "zero interest in turning any of their games into movies." So it may be a non-starter, in any event.

Black's campaign for a Red Dead movie has been going on for years, as he said in 2024 that he "can't believe" there hasn't been a Red Dead or GTA movie yet.

Rockstar parent company Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick has said the company would want to fund a potential GTA or Red Dead movie itself to avoid a situation where some other entity might get to call the creative shots.

"While we have the balance sheet to do it, we don't have the corporate expertise to do it, because only a handful of people inside Take-Two have ever worked in that business. I'm one of them. But that's not what we do for a living," he said, referencing his previous experience as the president and CEO of movie studio 20th Century Fox in the early '90s at the age of 32.

Another reason Take-Two might be hesitant about making more video game movies is that movies are largely not very profitable business endeavors to begin with. 2023's The Super Mario Bros. was a massive commercial success with over $1 billion at the box office, but Zelnick said more often than not, video game movies fail and money is lost. A good example of that, and one that's close to home for Take-Two, was the 2024 Borderlands, which, in addition to being a stinker critically, lost a huge amount of money, despite its star-studded cast (which also included Black) and big marketing push. Take-Two may not be sweating that too much, though, as Lionsgate funded the movie, not Take-Two or Borderlands developer Gearbox. There could be reputational damage, however.

The Super Mario Galaxy movie is primed for a predictably massive opening weekend despite mixed reviews, but the biggest surprise may be the non-Mario characters who make an appearance. Just ahead of the film's opening Nintendo revealed that Fox McCloud appears alongside all the Mushroom Kingdom denizens. If all that fancy flying puts you or your kids in the mood to explore the Star Fox oeuvre, we're here to help.

Star Fox is a traditional on-rails space shooter starring a team of anthropomorphic starfighter pilots. The team itself is called Star Fox, and Fox McCloud is the team leader. The other pilots--in most games, Peppy, Falco, and Slippy--are your wingmen. The series debuted on the Super NES in 1993, showing off rudimentary but at-the-time mind-blowing 3D effects. So should you track down the original Star Fox and get shooting? Not necessarily.

If you're new to the series you probably want to start with the absolute peak, and the widespread fan consensus is that the all-time best Star Fox game is Star Fox 64. That game, which was released on the N64 in 1997, utterly nailed the fundamentals of Star Fox. The flying was sharp and responsive, the story was rich, there were multiple branching paths to explore and encourage multiple playthroughs, and it introduced full 3D dogfight stages. You really don't get any better Star Fox than this one.

Nowadays the easiest and most widespread way to play Star Fox 64 is on the Nintendo Switch with a Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription. The N64 library includes Star Fox 64, and like other N64 games on the service it also includes suspend points and rewinds for convenience. You need the more expensive Expansion Pack tier of Switch Online to access the N64 library, but for Switch or Switch 2 owners it's a no-fuss way to access the best Star Fox adventure to date. If you happen to have a Nintendo 3DS you could also track down the port released for that system, called Star Fox 64 3D. It's a very solid port with some new bells and whistles including stereoscopic 3D. But it will probably be more expensive to track down on the secondhand market, and it's tied to hardware that can be hard to find too.

If you've already played Star Fox 64 or just want to venture outside of that to explore more of Star Fox history, it's worth going back to the original Star Fox, Star Fox Command, or Star Fox Adventures. The original is available on the Switch Online subscription without the Expansion Pack. Command and Adventures will require some hunting down for physical copies, similar to 64 3D. Starlink: Battle for Atlas, Ubisoft's fizzled toys-to-life game, also included a Star Fox cameo, making it an unofficial and pretty good Star Fox game. That game is still available, often not too expensive to find used, and doesn't require the collectible toys to actually play.

Looking ahead, there are rumors swirling of a new Star Fox game coming this year, no doubt to capitalize on Fox's newfound fame from his big screen debut. Check out our ranking of the best Star Fox games for more recommendations.

Finally, if you've had your fill of official Star Fox games, there's no shortage of developers inspired by Star Fox to make their own on-rails shooters starring a cast of animal fighter jocks. Some standouts include Ex-Zodiac, which seeks to imitate the classic SNES aesthetic; Fur Squadron Phoenix, which carries a more modernized look; the roguelike Whisker Squadron: Survivor; and the upcoming Wild Blue Skies.

One striking feature of the game is its art direction, and if you want to explore how Sandfall Interactive combined classic art influences with modern inspiration, you can do so with this new art book. Ahead of its November 24 release, The Art of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is on sale for $57 (was $60) on Amazon, and publisher Udon Entertainment is also offering an exclusive Collector's Edition for $100.

Change often leaves indie developers balancing their own creative plans with what players expect after a hit. Success, especially sudden success, can reshape a studio's future overnight.

Players now expect ongoing updates, long-term support, and clear roadmaps. But even at the highest level, that model is difficult to sustain. Recent layoffs at Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite, highlighted how demanding live support has become. The tension between long-term vision and player demand is becoming harder to manage. Indie teams face similar pressure without the same resources.

Aggro Crab, the studio behind Peak, is one such team. However, the studio's legacy didn't start with a live-service title; instead it began with a comedic-yet-brutal soul like: Another Crab's Treasure. The title was a commercial and critical success, elevating the studio to new heights. But after finishing Another Crab's Treasure back in 2024, Aggro Crab's small team was exhausted. The three-year project left everyone drained.

"We were left with a lot of burnout, myself especially, because I probably crunched the hardest," studio head Nick Kaman said at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. "Because I was so attached to it."

What came next was a shift in approach. While Another Crab's Treasure sold well enough to fund another project, the team did not want to commit to another three-year development cycle. Instead, Aggro Crab opted for something lighter and faster.

The studio met up with another studio, Landfall, to co-create a game during a month-long game jam in South Korea. According to Aggro Crab, the studio came into the game jam with an idea about scouts getting lost on a remote island.

After three days in South Korea--and ideating in the months leading up to the trip--the game jam produced the core of Peak: a stamina bar that would be the player's main obstacle in climbing a mountain. At that point they already had many of the status effects--like frost and poison--that would be part of the stamina bar.

"By day seven we had a working prototype," Kaman said. "This was way too buggy to launch with, but look, we were climbing the mountain. We were understanding what the game was, and we were really excited about it."

Aggro Crab took the core of the game they made in South Korea and refined it over the following months, taking significantly less time than their previous game. The success was immediate and overwhelming, but Kaman attributed part of it to how they created the game.

"You get more shots at success for cheaper," he said "You're forced to constrain scope and when you do constrain scope you end up coming up with ideas that you wouldn't have otherwise."

Peak was developed as a response to burnout, but what happens when overnight success upends every plan a developer may have had? Titles like Kinetic Games' Phasmophobia broke out through Twitch, drawing hundreds of thousands of players seemingly overnight. And yet, an intense interest and demand that such games expand with more content and updates might not align with how their developers foresee the project's future.

"As a solo developer at the time, seeing so many people connect with something I'd built was incredibly humbling and exciting," Phasmophobia game director Daniel Knight told GameSpot. "There was definitely concern. Expectations changed overnight, and I became very aware that players now saw Phasmophobia as something much bigger than what it started as. The worry wasn't about the game's success, but about making sure we could grow responsibly without losing the core experience that made people fall in love with it in the first place."

The early days of Phasmophobia were reactive. Roadmaps were flexible as the small team adapted to working with a massive playerbase. Kinetic Games' guiding principle became preserving what had made the game successful. New maps like the Asylum and Point Hope Lighthouse were added, but the core gameplay of investigating and identifying ghosts remained unchanged.

"We never tried to add anything that would change the core formula," said director of partnerships and marketing Asim Tanvir. "It was about improving the experience, not reinventing it."

Over the years, Kinetic Games expanded content through seasonal events--sometimes reusing similar events year after year--that added new cosmetics, progression systems (most notably in the Apocalypse update), and reworks of existing maps alongside entirely new locations. Despite this, some players wondered why they weren't seeing more content in the form of additional maps, ghosts, or gameplay mechanics.

Kinetic Games emphasized that it never wanted to alter the core gameplay into something else, such as fighting the ghost directly, nor did they ever describe Phasmophobia as a "live-service."

"For us, 'live-service' is less about whether a game receives updates and more about the philosophy behind how those updates are delivered," Tanvir said. "Live-service often implies a model where content, progression, and player engagement are tightly structured around ongoing monetization or fixed engagement loops."

The team deliberately avoided putting pressure on players--or themselves--to monetize or release content on a rigid schedule. That lack of financial and temporal pressure allowed Kinetic Games to slow down and adjust timelines as needed. Neither the development team nor the players wanted any sort of pressure--monetary or temporal--to keep up.

That pressure builds up over time no matter what, especially after huge, breakout launches where hundreds of thousands of players eat up content meant to last months in a matter of days. The crunch to meet expectations following an unexpected hit is difficult to manage. Oftentimes, plans made before launch never work. Such is the case for Ghost Ship Games, the studio behind Deep Rock Galactic.

"Most of the plans that we had changed completely after we launched," Ghost Ship Games CEO Søren Lundgaard told GameSpot. "I think that's something other teams tend to do wrong, where they do too much planning of the next updates after an early-access launch, and they get frustrated that that does not align with what the players want. So most of your plans changed after the launch."

Deep Rock Galactic, which saw major success after launch but not nearly as overwhelming as that of Peak or Phasmaphobia, couldn't have handled success any larger than what it saw.

"The amount of incoming messages from players, and trying to respond to them in a timely manner and so on, would become quite difficult," Lundgaard said. "We were too few people."

Ghost Ship Games had plans for new biomes, weapons, and other content for after release but had to scrap or delay most pre-launch plans to focus on system designs that would keep their growing playerbase engaged. Its Left 4 Dead-like systems weren't enough to retain players and encourage them to invite their friends, so the team had to create new ways to keep players they had hooked coming back. Updates needed to come at a breakneck pace.

"The cadence basically started at an extremely fast pace," Lundgaard said. "We did weekly updates, but it has slowed down over the years. Then we went to two weeks, one month, two months, three months, and so on. The largest gaps were six months between the seasons."

Sometimes, moving on is the best option when a studio no longer feels invested in their breakout hit. For Peak, Aggro Crab confirmed earlier this year that the "friendslop" mountain climber will receive one more major update in 2026 before the studio moves on to primarily focus on upcoming games. There would be one final peak to climb before the sunset falls on the mountain.

Just like Phasmaphobia, Aggro Crab never intended for Peak to be a live-service title. No microtransactions or daily challenges to push players to invest time and money into the game were included or planned.

The choice was similar for Ghost Ship Games, which actually passed part of the responsibility of development of Deep Rock Galactic to another studio, Funday Games, so that the team could focus on taking risks by using the Deep Rock Galactic IP to develop new projects, like the Vampire Survivors-inspired Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor.

Breakout hits test more than a game--they test the people behind it. Peak, Phasmophobia, and Deep Rock Galactic each forced their teams to confront a sudden flood of players, unexpected demands, and the limits of small-team development. Overnight success can rewrite priorities, scrap pre-launch plans, and stretch resources in ways no studio can fully anticipate.

For indie developers, the challenge isn't just creating something players love: It's managing what comes after. Decisions about updates, scope, and pacing ripple across teams, communities, and future projects. The lessons from these studios show that the climb to the top can teach more than the view from it ever will.

This includes RPG hits like Octopath Traveler 0, casual farming games like Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, and the sci-fi horror of Cronos. Console deals this week are a bit harder to come by. However, there are a few fun accessories on sale, so if you're looking for some new gear, there's still a chance to cash in on great price cuts this week.

You'll also find Octopath Traveler 0 at its lowest price ever ($40, was $50), which our review gave an 8/10 for its deep customization options and a nice balance between relaxed town-building and intense combat. If you're glad it's finally spring, check out Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar to run your own farm and explore small-town living. It's only seeing a slight discount to $40 (was $50), but this is the best price we've seen for it on Switch 2.

Cronos is also available for its best price ever at $29.49 (was $40). Developed by Bloober Team, the survival horror game also earned an 8/10 in our review, thanks to an ominous soundtrack, tense action, and a creepy sci-fi world that's teaming with secrets. If you're a long-time fan of Bloober Team (or horror games in general), it's bound to be a good addition to your library.

Over on Switch, you can find Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake for $40 (was $60). We'd highly recommend it to just about everyone, as it does a wonderful job of modernizing the iconic game for a new audience. For more retro action made modern, Super Mario RPG is available for $36 (was $60). That matches its lowest price ever, which we last saw in the summer of 2025. And if The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has you obsessed with Yoshi, you can pick up Yoshi's Crafted World for $47 (was $60).

Though they're not quite "accessories," several Amiibo are still discounted at Best Buy (these have been around for a few weeks now). This includes the Street Fighter 6: Luke Amiibo for $10 (was $40), Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Tulin Amiibo for $20 (was $30), and the Kirby & Warp Star Amiibo for $40 (was $50). A few others are up for grabs, so be sure to check out the full catalog. We can't imagine they'll remain at this price much longer.

As far as controllers are concerned, the Turtle Beach Rematch Wireless Controller (Donkey Kong) is currently one of the best options. Available for $32.59 (was $60), this is the lowest price we've ever seen for the popular model. Along with support for both Switch and Switch 2, it features a striking lenticular design that shifts as you move the controller. Coupled with two programmable back buttons, support for motion controls, and up to 40 hours of play on a charge, and it's quite a great deal at under $35.

If you plan to travel with your Switch, you should probably pair it with a durable travel case. Consider grabbing the RDS Industries Game Traveler Deluxe Crossbody Bag for $20 (was $30). Featuring a padded pocket for the console and enough extra space for some games, microSD cards, and other accessories, it's an easy way to schlep around your handheld. The horizontal format is still listed at $20, but the vertical format has officially sold out at this price.

Switch console deals are hard to come by, so expect to pay full price for both the Switch and Switch 2 for the foreseeable future.
