GS The Dwarf Fortress 20th Anniversary Archival Collector's Edition Launches In Augu

It's hard to believe, but Dwarf Fortress burst onto the scene two decades ago. The original version of the game used chunky ASCII graphics--but when an updated version with improved graphics was launched in 2022, the management sim grew wildly popular, and it's now considered an iconic within the genre. To celebrate its legacy, the Dwarf Fortress 20th Anniversary Archival Collector's Edition is launching on August 31. Preorders are now open, and if you're a long-time fan, you'll probably want to take a peek at all the collectibles packed inside this premium bundle.

New to Dwarf Fortress? The game includes in-game tutorials to help you get up to speed with its complexities. At the end of the day, the objective is quite simple--build and manage a thriving community of dwarves while fending off various threats. The game is known for the slogan, "Losing is fun," so even if things don't go your way, you can learn from your mistakes before setting out to start a new colony.

The scope of the Dwarf Fortress is nothing short of mind-blowing--the game will randomly generate hundreds of different monsters, you'll contend with a dynamic weather system that tracks everything from humidity to wind speeds, and there are over 200 mineral types to gather, each with unique properties that determine their usefulness. Even things like poetry and dancing are available to your dwarves, making this a sweeping simulation game that's easy to lose hours in.

Now is a pretty great time to jump into Dwarf Fortress, as its Adventure Mode just went live in January. This mode introduces a few changes to the chaos, including the option to take on various quests to search for lost treasure or help the inhabitants of different settlements.

If you're seeking another deep management sim, Rimworld is currently on sale at Fanatical. This game tasks you with helping a handful of survivors who have crashed on a mysterious planet. Like Dwarf Fortress, there's a lot of complexity to Rimworld, as you figure out the best way to build your bases, fend off threats, and manage all your resources. Newcomers to the genre can pick up the base game for $25.54 (was $35), though the Explorer Pack and Deluxe Pack are also on sale, which get you various expansions and additional content.
