GS Battlefield 6 Will Get A Proper Server Browser This Year

Battlefield 6 is officially getting a proper server browser later this year, one that will allow for persistent servers.

Server browsers have long been an option in previous Battlefield games, dating all the way back to the game's early PC gaming roots when matchmaking as we currently know it didn't exist. Persistent servers allow players to stay in a specific experience or on a particular map with the same group of players, without having to repeatedly return to the game's main menu in order to use the game's dedicated matchmaking system. That in turn, lets communities form on servers in a way that isn't possible through standard matchmaking. Servers gives players more options, like being able to select servers based on ping and other factors.

Despite vocal support from players on the need for a server browser in Battlefield 6, the core game shipped without one, though technically players could use the community-focused Portal mode as a substitute--something one Battlefield 6 producer described as "the best of both worlds" and another said "caters to the majority of use cases."

Flash forward to now, and Battlefield Studios has announced a server browser is indeed coming this year, though it didn't provide much information or expand on how its philosophy regarding the need for a server browser had changed. The server browser will allow for persistent servers that can be customized as well as include a pre-game lobby feature, but few other details, including when it will launch, weren't given.

The server browser was just one among a list of new features and quality-of-life improvements Battlefield Studios said would be coming to Battlefield 6 this year. In addition to the server browser, the game will also receive a spectator mode, a platoon clan system, leaderboards, and in-game proximity chat. The game's existing New Sobek City and Blackwell Fields maps will also receive reworks based on player feedback. When, precisely, these features will be added was not announced.

Quality-of-life features were far from all that Battlefield Studios had to announce. It also outlined its plans for Battlefield 6's next three seasons, including remakes of fan-favorite maps for Season 3, the return of Wake Island and naval warfare in Season 4, and three additional maps coming in Season 5. Those maps will be Battlefield 6's largest to date, with Season 3's Railway to Golmud said to be nearly four times the size of the game's current largest map, and Season 4's Tsuru Reef said to be even larger.
